Should individual states have the right to make gay marriage legal in their state?

Yes, individual states should have the right to make gay marriage legal, however the federal government does have to step up and make a decision as well. A main reason for people wanting gay marriage beyond the issue of equality is the issue that married couples currently get tax benefits and other benefits from the federal government as a result of being married. If the federal government doesn't recognize a same-sex union, the same-sex couple cannot receieve the federal benefits, which is still inequality.

It shouldn't be up to the voters of the state whether to allow same-sex marriage or to not allow it because it is a decision that only impacts a minority group. I shouldn't have the right to vote on equality issues that only impacts 10% or less of the population. If people voted on equality issues, women and African-Americans may have never been given the right to vote, or African-Americans would continue to be slaves and be treated as second rate citizens. Or at least it would have taken our nation a lot longer to fix these things. Interracial marriages were highly unpopular and banned in much of the country until it was legalized. We'd possibly still have that fight going on today if the people had a vote. We can't allow a mob to rule for the minority, especially when it is such a sensitive subject that many people are ignorant about.

A reason a lot of people are against same-sex marriage is because they feel their religious institution will have to recognize it. This is simply untrue. There is a difference between a religious marriage and a civil marriage. The government should allow two consenting adults to marry, regardless and allow the religious institutions to recognize or not recognize a religious marriage. Government isn't meant to regulate religious marriage, and shouldn't.Should individual states have the right to make gay marriage legal in their state?
It should be legal everywhere. I've heard people saying ';it goes against god'; ';it says in the bible...'; blah blah blah. What does the bible have to do with law? I thought they were supposed to be seperate, and if you believe in God you must know that he will pass judgement, it's not up to busy bodies who want to get into everyone's business. I say live and let live, gay people aren't hurting anyone by getting married or having kids. People probably said the same things about inter-racial marriage back in the 50's.Should individual states have the right to make gay marriage legal in their state?
No i tink a big widely disputed topic needs to be decided by the country as a whole. I think it also helps to unify the country.. If different states have completly different laws i dont think that would be good for unity
I think it is best left to the voters in each state. That way only a handful will legalize it as the majority of the country has better sense.
no. the federal government is supposed to protect all US citizens' rights, and it should therefore make gay marriage legal everywhere.
yes they are given the right by the constitution... they might lose federal funding but they are allowed... i dont personally agree with gay marriage but it is up to the state
I cannot believe that the topic of gay marriage is even debatable. The federal government should make it legal throughout the entire country.
Yes.

Read the Constitution. Then re-read the 10th amendment.
