Why are older people more likely to be against gay marriage?

Is it because they are old? Or because of the time they grew up in?

Does that make sense?

I guess I'm wondering if today's youth will grow to be opposed to gay marriage also or if public opinion will change dramatically when the older generation passes. Why are older people more likely to be against gay marriage?
Because back then it wasn't as accepted. Why are older people more likely to be against gay marriage?
It's very much a generational thing, and that's somewhat encouraging, really. Surveys and studies show that more and more people are becoming accepting of same sex marriage. I read this morning that the group most likely to vote against Prop 8 in CA this week was young voters. As voters were older, so went their views toward supporting Prop 8 (eliminating same sex marriage).

Just a few years ago, the spread between those who supported gay marriage and those who opposed in, in the election, was huge. Double Digits. A few years later, in 2008, it's a much more modest percentage difference. As older voters either pass on or stop voting, replaced by younger voters, it will happen. It's only a matter of time.
It is both: because they are old and because of the time they grew up in. You know that old people don't like change. (And if you don't believe me, try finding an old person who can work a computer or a DVD player). They grew up in a time when gays were looked at as abnormal....and since it is not familiar to them, they are afraid of it.

Today's youth will definitely be more tolerant. They are growing up knowing that it is okay to be gay and they will be comfortable with it so they won't have the same intolerant, hateful views.
I think its because f the time they grew up in.

People are more accepting NOW then they were back then.

I accept gay marriage.

Love is love.

Gender doesn't matter at all.

But old people were taught to believe

that it was wrong...soo that's

what they TRY to teach

younger people.
Rest assured that only ';Old People'; were not the only ones that voted against Proposition 8 in California. 54% of the voters voted against the issue and statistically, only 26% of the population is over 55.

Making General Statements like you have made cannot be proven.
It was more the time they grew up in. There are some people about from the Elizibeth Eckford incident who spit at black people. It was a different time.
It's probably because of the era they were born and raised in.

Today's youth is much more different than last century's.
It's because such things weren't taking place when they were younger and it's quite often that people are against and afraid of something they are not familiar with and don't understand
It's a generational thing, they grew up in a more repressive period homosexually speaking.
Because of the time they were brought up in, where most people were married by the age of twenty or so and they were no gay relationships what so ever.

(:

Public opinion has greatly changed.
i think the answer made by ';gemma ;)'; is brilliant.

couldn't have put it better myself to be honest!

xo
Because they grew up in the time where they thought it was a choice to be gay.
Well back in 1864, we ain't got no fancy gays to discriminate against, we had dem black people!
old school like that
