Don't bother talking about the sanctity of marriage - the original anti-gay marriage bill was created by a Christian who was FOUR TIMES divorced. What are some secular reasons to not allow gay marriage?
if you take religion out, there's absolutely no logical argument against gay marriage. and because religion and government go together about as well as a bottle of vodka and a car (it's unconstitutional, too), there is absolutely no reason for the government to ban gay marriage.
update: Emeralddreaming - having any religious institution in the government in the first place is unconstitutional. if marriage is a religious ceremony, then the government should only grant civil unions to both heterosexual and homosexual couples. If you're going to put it into law, it can't be based on religion.
FiFi - slavery was a tradition
Aber12 - It is just plain arrogant to tell gay people whether or not they can handle marriage. Let them manage their own relationships and you have absolutely no right to tell them what they can or can't handle. And then you compare homosexual relationships to rape. One little difference, rape isn't consensual.
mt - if homosexuality is unnatural, then why does it occur in nature? if marriage is about procreation, should we ban marriage between old couples or infertile couples? If you don't like anal sex (which is also practiced among many heterosexual couples), don't do it! how difficult is that? regarding your comment on voting on gay marriage. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe the purpose of a constitution is to protect minorities from the majority? And as I said to many people here, if marriage is a religious institution, it should not be defined anywhere in government. governments only deal with civil marriages, which are much different than the religious marriages that are managed by churches.
ladybold04 - as I said to emeralddreaming, it is unconstitutional to put any religious institution in government. about homosexuality being a choice, let me say this to you perfectly clearly. IT IS NOT A CHOICE. once again, being gay is NOT a choice. When did you make your decision to like men? give me the specific time you made your choice. Also, if it was a choice, other animals which lack the ability to make conscious decisions would not have homosexual individuals within the species, yet they do. Either way, sexual orientation is not something an individual has control over, and they should therefore not be discriminated against.
Al Bundy - can children, animals, or hamburgers sign marriage contracts? is a marriage between a person and a child/animal/hamburger consensual? As long as a civil marriage (which has nothing to do with a religious marriage) is consensual, even if it is between 100 people, I don't give a sh*t and you shouldn't either. What are some secular reasons to not allow gay marriage?
How about the fact that the government shouldn't be in the marriage business to begin with. The term is for a religious ceremony dating back thousands of years. Now they should have the right to declare civil unions, for both straight and gay couples, but not marriage.
How about the fact that the American people have spoken and in states that allow it by consent of the people, then so be it, but in others then the will of the people should be recognized.
I know that some people don't agree with me but I think that marriage is a religious rite. No religious rite should be acknowledged by the government nor should government benefits be given based upon whether a person has went through a religious rite. It doesn't matter to me whether the couple is gay, straight or whatever. Leave the religious rite to the churches. Each religious institution should make up whatever requirements it wants for them to conduct their religious rites. If a religious institution wants to marry a gay couple, that should be their choice. The government has no business being involved or giving benefits to anyone for having a religious rite.
If a couple of people want to join their assets in a business contract similar to a civil union, then the government can be involved if it wants to. That is a business contract and like any other business contract the government has no right to discriminate based on race or gender.
It will lead the way to people marrying children, animals, hamburgers. And it would also lead to polygamy which is wrong, no man should be forced to put up with multiple wives. It would also allow schools to teach my children that being gay is okay. That would totally contradict the hatred I'm trying to embed in them.
I think all the Christians should have their ceremony the way they always have but change their licenses to be called civil union, but have the words mean marriage. Then let the gay community get marriage licenses but not civil union licenses and then no one should care
There is no rational, secular argument against. The ban on gay marriage is based on religious demagoguery, fear, hatred, prejudice, stereotyping, and ignorance.
If we give some people equal rights, soon everyone will want them!
There are none really... Gays will be together no matter what, so, them getting married shouldn't pose any problem
as soon as i get a answer for the priest kid ucking ill let u know
Because it's hard for America now to understand that America was founded to escape religious persecution.
And to ask for acceptance from generations who have been raised to not except any different ideologies besides there own unless forced to do so by government will never override any minority vote.
Give me your tired, your poor,
BUT not your gays.
May I include that being gay is not a choice.
Despite what others believe.
People want scientific proof of it being otherwise.
But blindly follow religion...
What are you gonna do.
And if brittany spears is allowed to get drunk marry her best friend than have it annulled the next day,
why are two people who sincerely love eachother not allowed to marry?
Marriage is already a mockery.
Letting people who genuinely care for eachother won't really make a difference.
Honestly, it has nothing to do with religion,
and everything to do with a group of crotchety old unaccepting cowards who are a shame to america.
May I include:
Marriage IS NOT a religious institution.
Ex. When someone gets divorced and marry's again,
it's still adultery.
Churches still marry divorcees without a second thought everyday.
A sin is a sin in the eyes of god.
And my god, wants people to be happy.
My god died on the cross for a reason:
Because he knows people are sinners and are going to sin.
I refuse to believe god is proud of anyone who uses religion as an excuse to oppress people and to add more hate to an already love deprived world.
God's bigger than that guys.
So using religion as an argument (at least Christianity) is the wrong way to handle it.
I'm for Civil Unions but against Gay Marriage, and there -is- a distinction.
Civil Union: Grant them all the legal benefits of a married couple.
Marriage: Religious connotation
Forcing a religion to break a cardinal rule of their tenets is going against the Constitution. Each Church should have its own ability to decide what to allow.
yes lets say that its ok to be gay and have even more HIV and AIDs in this world... i think not. Gay people can't handle being married they are dramatic and break up all the time, they just want to be equal well until they are equal with society that isn't going to happen. Once you allow gay marriage well lets allow rape when the girl is 10 and the man is in his 20s she says yes b/c she has no idea. Ya lets have the world come crashing down
Just cause some irresponsible guy wrote the bill doesn't mean gay marriage is OK.
its all about tradition
and gay marriage doesn't fit in that category

Marriage is not a right. People do it everyday. Like it or not, two join together under God. Gay-Marriage is an oxymoron. Being gay is a choice and for years it has been taboo so why force it on people who find it distasteful? What does the person being a Christian who divorced ';FOUR TIMES'; have to do with gay people?
Marriage itself is not a mockery. People make mockery of marriage though. Being gay is a choice, you choose to be that way just like you choose who you want to like, love, be with or be around. Gay people make things even worse by picketing for the right of getting married then knocking a cross out of that woman's hand. How do you want to get married in the church of God but don't respect the cross His son Jesus died on for our sins? Gays come out the closet and announce their gay like its a national holiday. Why can't gay people just live as everyone else does? Why so much exposure? I feel that gays should not have the right to make mockery of my God by getting married in His house. I don't see anything wrong with this country passing a gay marriage law that prohibits the joining of the two in churches. How about Vegas? Is that better?
So you are saying that people don't choose to be gay? I can choose to like men or women if that is what I prefer. What you prefer in your lover is your choice. Conversation over. It's banned so who cares.
Let's see if I can describe this in clinical terms so that is can be understood, yet not considered ';Abuse'; and flagged which I am sure it will be anyway.
Males and females of a species are needed in order to procreate. The placement of a males penis into the females vagina and the resulting ejaculation and deposit of sperm allows for the fertilization of the females egg thereby producing a child.
When a male places his penis in another man's anus, the result is fecal matter on the penis, which is gross and produces nothing but a foul smell and a mess.
Therefore heterosexual behavior is normal and natural and homosexual behavior is not normal or natural.
